Cloughsey Family in Troy, New York
Although there is no evidence of his parents living in America, records suggest that David lived in Troy possibly with three brothers and two sisters. As a young man, probably in 1856, David married Dora Scanlon, another Irish immigrant. They had three known children: Edward born in 1857, Norah born in 1859 and Thomas born in 1861; all in Troy, placing David in the city as early as 1857. However, a search of 1859-1861 Troy City directories lists no David Cloughsey. The only Cloughsey name listed was that of a Patrick Clohisy [sic], a laborer living in the Irish neighborhood at Fourth Street near Harrison Street in South Troy. A search of the 1860 US Census also did not turn up a David Cloughsey family, although the Patrick Clohisy family was recorded:

The census suggests that this Patrick Cloughsey was born in Ireland in 1830, but had come to America sometime before 1855 when his eldest son was born. Family tradition recounts Cloughsey uncles living in America. Patrick Clohisy is believed to be one of these Uncles, very likely an older brother of our ancestor David Cloughsey. The fact that Patrick named his eldest son David is strong evidence of a family connection. St. Joseph's parish church was located just blocks from Patrick's home. A request has been sent to the church for a marriage record of Patrick and Catherine and baptism records of their children. These records may prove conclusively some kinship between Patrick and our ancestor David Cloughsey. In this period, several Scanlon names are recorded in Troy City records - possibly relatives of Dora Scanlon. It is likely that Dora and David had met in Troy and were married there at St. Joseph's church in about 1856, A request has been sent to the church for a record of this marriage, which may name Dora Scanlon's parents. A request has also been sent for the baptism records of Dora and David's children.
